The City of Johannesburg is calling on commentary on the proposed renaming of streets and facilities in honour of various community heroes and icons.
The municipality says it is considering proposals for renaming the Main Road in Eldorado Park to Don Mattera Road and Westbury Recreation Centre to the Don Mattera Recreation Centre, in honour of the anti-apartheid activist, writer and poet; Mabaleng Sports Ground in Westbury to be renamed Donnie Gilmour Sports Ground, after the soccer legend, and Nikkel Crescent in Eldorado Park to be renamed Nathaniel Julies Crescent, the teenage shooting victim who lost his life in 2020.
According to the City, the renaming proposals in honour of Don Mattera and Donnie Gilmour have been put forward by the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation with the renaming proposal in honour of Nathaniel Julies put forward by Community Accountability Gatekeepers who represent the Julies family, with all proposals subject to public consultation, in accordance with the City’s Policy on naming of Streets and Public Places.
The City is also calling for comment on the proposed renaming of De Beer Street in Braamfontein to Mthokozisi Ntumba Street, in honour of the civil servant who lost her life in March 2021 during the student protests in Braamfontein.
