The redevelopment of Soshanguve Mall is due for completion towards the end of 2025 with the project spanning two phases in the space that previously housed the original Soshanguve Plaza shopping centre.
Developed by Cubisol, Phase 1, which is complete, saw the opening of the 7 500m2 Value Centre in 2024 with the second phase to introduce a 55 500m2 double-tiered retail centre.
Despite being underdeveloped, Soshanguve boasts a current metro area population of over 900 000 with its growing economy a major player in the Tshwane region’s 26.8% contribution to Gauteng’s GDP. Its population is vastly multi-ethnic with its name speaking to the Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni, and Venda tribes that were resettled from Mamelodi and Atteridgeville in 1974.
Soshanguve is also situated in a 2 000ha heritage site where the Tswaing Meteorite Crater has become a worldwide attraction and honouring the area’s heritage was essential in the mall’s conceptual design by KMH Architects.
The mall’s layout draws inspiration from the crater’s circular form, creating a harmonious flow that mimics the natural curves of the land with its design integrating the natural landscape, ensuring that the crater remains the area’s focal point. The architects incorporated large, open-air spaces and natural, sustainable materials that blend seamlessly with the surroundings, allowing the crater to remain visually and spiritually present.
Interactive and educational spaces within the mall will tell the story of the meteorite’s impact, the formation of the crater, and the rich cultural history of the Soshanguve community.
The developers also included the Taxi Association in its planning and implementation of the transport strategy around the mall, while incorporating local vendors.
The mall has secured tenants including Shoprite, Mr Price, TFG, Cashbuild, SPAR, all major banks, Pepkor Group, KFC, Chicken Licken, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Woolworths, Edgars and Liquor City.
