The City of Cape Town plans to redevelop the Good Hope Centre by retaining the iconic dome while optimising the surrounding space for mixed-use potential.
According to Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, the proposed development aims to balance heritage preservation with the creation of a vibrant, modern precinct to potentially include a pedestrian-friendly forecourt, ground floor retail space, residential and commercial units, as well as structured underground parking.
Currently, the Good Hope Centre is leased on a month-to-month basis however, private sector investment is required to sustainably unlock the site’s immense economic potential through mixed-use development, says the municipality.
Council approved the commencement of the public participation process on the 5th of December 2024. Once details are finalised, the City will update the public on opportunities to comment on the proposed redevelopment via public notices, its official website, and public meetings.
