Anglo American has sold its 55 Marshall Street building to inner-city developer, Olitzki Property Holdings (OPH), as part of its broader strategy to contribute to the rejuvenation of Joburg’s CBD.
The 50 000m2 55 Marshall Street building, originally constructed in 1999 and previously serving as the corporate headquarters of Anglo-American Platinum, will be repurposed into a vibrant hub of public and commercial activity with a ‘prestigious’ tenant having committed to a lease.
The asset is one of five buildings that forms part of Anglo American’s CBD campus of more than 100 000m2 .
The company said it went through a rigorous process to determine the best future for its CBD buildings, determining that the best way to preserve these heritage assets would be through partnerships with notable institutions who share the vision of revitalising the CBD.
In 2023, it handed over its 45 Main Street building to the Maharishi Institute which is currently being transformed into a campus that will provide education and employment opportunities for up to 3 000 underprivileged students.
In June 2024, 47 Main Street building was handed over to WITS Business School to house the Wits Crucible, a business incubator aimed at developing small enterprises. This facility is expected to be operational by 2025.
Anglo American plans to convert its 44 Main Street building into a mixed-use public space that focuses on development of youth, while celebrating and preserving its history, heritage, and the arts.
