SAPOA Retail Trends Report for Q3 2023

Trade in South Africa’s shopping centres further moderated during Q3 2023 with year-on-year growth in the index’s annualised trading density, decelerating to 7.6% from 8.4% in the previous quarter.

The deceleration came against a background of continued low economic growth, high unemployment, and peaking interest rates, according to the MSCI South Africa Quarterly Retail Trading Index which is based on data collected for 112 retail centres covering more than 5.2 million square metres.

The index’s trading density ended Q3 2023 at an annualised R40.10 per square metre, well clear of its pre-pandemic market of R35.00 per square metre.
