Construction begins on Africa’s first biophilic building in Cape Town

Construction has begun on Africa’s first biophilic building, The Fynbos, in Cape Town.

Once completed, the mixed-use building will stand 24 storeys high on Upper Bree Street in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD featuring 689 apartments, a rooftop sunset terrace with a lap pool and co-working space, a rooftop fitness centre, as well as a ground-floor plant-based restaurant, a tearoom, and a botanical bar.

Added to this, The Fynbos will also boast a waterfall at the front reception of the building which will be the starting point of a unique water feature which will run from Buitengracht to Bree Street.

Its exterior will be draped in a 1 200m2 vertical garden made up of 30 species of indigenous trees and 20 species of indigenous shrubs with its pioneering garden system designed by a specialist team of botanists that will be monitored by a highly technical water and nutrient system with automated root scanners, monitored water content and drainage, as well as ‘flying’ gardeners who will manage maintenance externally.

Developed by Lurra Capital, apartments at The Fynbos start from R1.152 million (luxury studio units) ranging from 24m2 to 40m2 with one-bedroom apartments at R1.968 million (34m2 to 58m2) and two-bedroom apartments from R4.920 million ranging up to 82m2.
