Energy Performance Certificate regulations deadline extended by 3 years to 2025

SAPOA has welcomed the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) granting it of a three year extension on the mandatory display of energy performance certificates (EPCs).

As SAPOA, we have today noted (26th of November 2022) with appreciation that the Minister has signed an amendment to the applicable regulations, to extend the deadline to publicly display EPCs from the 7th of December 2022 for a period of three years to the 7th of December 2025. This has been gazetted today and means that all property owners now have a further period of three years in order to comply with the regulations,” commented CEO of SAPOA, Neil Gopal.

The regulations form part of the goals set out in the post-2015 National Energy Efficiency Strategy which requires property owners to reduce the energy consumption of their buildings by 16% by 2030.

In the same gazette, SAPOA indicated that certain other proposed amendments to the regulations were published, with public comment thereon due by the 25th of December 2022.

Our team will study these proposed amendments and ensure that SAPOA’s comment is provided timeously, and we will continue with our efforts to work with the DMRE and to establish the proposed joint technical committee in order to deal with all the other technical matters raised by our members“.

SAPOA once again reiterates its call on the property industry to continue supporting various climate change initiatives and to continue with projects which reduce greenhouse emissions in support of government’s obligations to comply with COP26 commitments.”
