Property investment and development company, FPG Property Fund, has announced that Bothasig Mall in Cape Town will undergo a significant refurbishment in 2022 which will include an upgrade of all common areas, the parking area, and an enhanced layout of the centre, with a raised skylight roof.

In addition, the centre has recently seen an upgrade of its anchor tenant Shoprite, which has been converted into a modern Checkers.

Access to the centre from Vryburger Avenue has also been improved by creating a convenient double entry and exit into the shopping centre’s parking area.

The refurbishment will enrich the retail experience for both local shoppers and existing tenants. Bothasig Mall is conveniently close to the N7, offering easy access and convenience which extends to the balanced mix of tenants including Wimpy, Checkers, Ackermans, PnP Clothing, Build-It, and many more. Its tenant mix offers a one-stop shopping solution with a blend of essential and nice-to-have shopping experiences.

Bothasig is a vibrant community filled with civic organisations such as schools, churches, sports clubs and more. We have seen an increase of younger families coming into the area and visiting the shopping centre, while residents that have been in the community for many years view it as part of the fabric of the area. We are very fortunate that the shoppers of Bothasig Mall have been visiting the centre for decades, and the centre is beloved in the community. Newer centres do not have the community capital of a historic shopping centre, such as this one, and it’s often after many years before they enjoy the levels of loyalty we enjoy from our customers”, comments Leandro Melim, Business Development Manager of FPG.

FPG plans to modernize the shopping centre to bring it in line with a new retail aesthetic. These modern designs include brand new ablution facilities and green spaces, and the upgrades will include a new look Checkers, which recently opened.

In January 2022, FPG will begin on the next construction phase with a new Nando’s drive thru.

Further refurbishments will include:

  • Common area walkways; paving, lighting, ceilings, canopy, and painting.
  • New shopfronts.
  • New entrance portal and cladding.
  • Upgraded ablutions, which have been moved to the ground floor for ease of access.
  • New lights in the parking area.
  • An improved tenant mix by adding more retail area for additional line shops.
  • Improved security by installing fencing and cameras.
  • Enhanced landscaping.

Bothasig Mall has a sizable parking area and with 565 parking bays. Offering free parking, the reconfiguration of the primary access way assists shoppers to get into – and out of – the centre far more efficiently and safely. Internal configurations of the parking area will accommodate the new drive-thru and more plants.

The property occupies 40 000m2 of land, of which 12 000m2 is currently gross lettable area (GLA). The plan for FPG in 2022 and beyond is to add more shops in the additional space, which is currently underutilized areas of land around the centre.

We believe that the newly refurbished centre will complement and enhance the vibrancy of the community. Bothasig Mall is being repositioned to offer a safe, convenient and aesthetically pleasing modern shopping environment that is a meeting place for locals. This will enhance the overall experience of the neighbouring communities of Bothasig, Edgemead and Richwood,” concludes Melim.
