Women’s Property Network launches inaugural 2021 State of Gender Diversity in the Listed Real Estate Sector report

State of Gender Transformation Report

The Women’s Property Network in collaboration with the Property Sector Charter Council and Anchor Stockbrokers have published the inaugural 2021 State of Gender Diversity on JSE Listed Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

SA REITs are a significant economic contributor to the sector and as a result, they are arguably the largest employer and procurer of goods and services within the property industry.

While the focus of this report is on the South African listed property segment, its intention is to, in future, expand the research to include other segments of the sector, i.e., property services, built environment and property finance and to present a holistic picture when addressing the challenge of gender diversity.

The purpose of the report is summarised as follows:

  • To present the statistics in relation to historic female representation at board level within the SA listed property sector.
  • To track the overall progress or lack thereof in relation to gender diversity at this level of seniority over the defined period (2013 to 2020).
  • To interrogate the reasons behind both the progress and non-progress of gender diversity.
  • To present various interventions which could be implemented by the listed property sector which result in better representation of women at board level.
