Starbucks South Africa has launched a brand-new café in Stellenbosch located in the upmarket Checkers FreshX store which overlooks Die Braak, the picturesque town square that is flanked by a beautiful Cape Dutch style church and other historical buildings.
This is the second Starbucks store in a Checkers FreshX supermarket, the first having opened in Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg earlier this month. It is also the sixth Starbucks store to open in a rollout of eight new stores in four weeks of which five are in Cape Town, one in Stellenbosch and one each in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The new Starbucks store has been designed with the town’s university students, wine country tourists and local shoppers in mind, offering the brand’s wide range of premium coffees within a comfortable neighbourhood place to relax and to enjoy the Starbucks experience. It also features a bike rack to accommodate students and cyclists on the go.
Adrian Maizey, CEO of Rand Capital Coffee, the licensee of Starbucks in South Africa, says Starbucks is proud to be part of the Stellenbosch community, which has an historic legacy as South Africa’s second oldest town and an inspiring wine, food, art, and cultural destination: “We are so excited to open our first store in Stellenbosch and can’t welcome new faces from the local community over the next few weeks.”
Willem Hunlun, COO of Checkers, says this collaboration between the two brands will make Starbucks’ menu more accessible to consumers with the increased retail footprint through the Checkers FreshX supermarket. “As Checkers continues to grow and expand its fresh offering, the partnership with Starbucks is evidence of our efforts to offer an improved and outstanding shopping experience.”
