More than 80 retail and property industry professionals from Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal have participated in the 2017 South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Retail Immersion Programme.

In 2016, the SACSC launched the Retail Immersion course with the objectives of improving shopping centre
management team’s understanding of retail, to develop business acumen and to create a retail focused mentality.

The pilot programme proved immensely successful and as such, the Retail Immersion Programme formed part of the
educational offerings of SACSC moving forward. The year-long programme aimed at Centre Management teams including Centre Managers, Operations Managers, Leasing Consultants, and Marketing Managers covered the most important aspects of retail and business acumen regarding optimal retail and shopping centre management.

Course facilitator and internationally renowned retail specialist Sash Padayachee said that he was excited by the
participation and the enthusiasm of the delegates over the past two years and that he looked forward to the next

The retail industry is one that is constantly evolving. Technology is taking over and unfortunately; human interaction and proper business acumen is sometimes undervalued. Courses such as the Retail Immersion Programme reiterates the importance of understanding retail, developing proper business acumen and having that retail-focused thinking to ensure the success of shopping centres and brands. This course focuses on many aspects and topics to improve the outlook of both shopping centres and retailers and I am certain that all who embarked on this journey with me and the SACSC have a new understanding and appreciation of this dynamic industry. The course immersed delegates with a step by step approach on the demands and requirements that retailers undergo from a ‘worms eye view’ up to the macro-economic evaluation from a ‘birds eye view’. I cannot wait for the next intake,” added Padayachee.
