The Gary Kirsten Foundation partnered with The Property Foundation in order to assist with the process of making their Community Sports Hub a reality. The Community Sports Hubs (CSH) congregate their surrounding communities by providing an accessible, safe & healthy environment for users of all ages. This project offers an aspirational offering that promotes active involvement in sports & education, whilst providing business opportunities, lifestyle choices & social activities. The Property Foundation will assist with fund-raising, land based issues and advice relating to construction and project management.
This Sports Hub will be an all weather multipurpose sports facility on the grounds of the Chris Hani High School in Khayelitsha. The anticipated R10 million development will provide a community focused sporting hub including training facilities for sport and skills development as well as small business opportunities. Sporting facilities will include an artificial surface cricket field that converts into two football/rugby pitches with an athletics track on the circumference.
Shipping containers will be converted into a gym and sports equipment will be provided on site. Containers will also be repurposed to provide enterprise development training opportunities to teach skills in a multitude of disciplines and local community businesses will be able to formalise their business in other containers to provide food, internet facilities and other services required at the Sports Centre.
The fund raising drive for this project will be aimed at large Corporates in South Africa and several NGOs are participating in the upliftment of the surrounding community.
CHRIS HANI HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS DAY
The Headmaster took this opportunity to introduce his 1400 plus pupils to sports through a sports day. In response to his request for assistance The Property Foundation reached out to several NGOs for help with coaches and equipment.
Sports celebrities including Gary Kirsten, attended this event wihich took place ago a few months ago.
The Headmaster adopted the project with enthusiasm and he had the backing of his Board of Governors which was crucial to the success of this project. He utilised the resources the Property Foundation was able to provide him for this event. The Grootbos Foundation was there for the football, and Gary Kirsten and The Khayelitsha Cricket Club took part in the cricket. The Property Foundation was on site assisting too. By exciting the learners and opening the world of sports to them through proper infrastructure the community can be energised to focus on growth and opportunity rather than the influence of crime.
