The Silo Cross Section – A building of extraordinary imagination. The Silo hotel will be located above Zeitz MOCAA in the Grain Silo Complex.
The Royal Portfolio has announced the latest addition to its portfolio of 5 star hotels that includes Royal Malewane, Birkenhead House, La Residence and a collection of Private Residences.
The Silo hotel is being built in the grain elevator portion of the historic Grain Silo Complex above what will become the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA).
Situated directly above the museum, the hotel occupies a very special location in the heart of Cape Town. The Silo will have 28 keys, including a spectacular penthouse. There will be a spa, gym, bar and restaurant, as well as a rooftop swimming pool and champagne bar with panoramic views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is set to welcome its first guests in late 2016.
Since first opening Royal Malewane in 2000, the vision of the Biden family has been to give guests a complete experience and a perfect stay.
The opening of the new hotel will enable The Royal Portfolio to offer guests their unique hospitality across a portfolio of quintessentially South African experiences including a Big 5 safari in the Greater Kruger National Park, wine tasting in the Cape Winelands, the coastal experience in Hermanus and now the natural wonder, art and culture of Cape Town.
David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront said,“We have no doubt that The Royal Portfolio will bring to this hotel their impeccably high standards and offer its guests an exclusive experience quite unlike any other.”
In 2013, La Residence was voted the No 1 Hotel In The World in the Condé Naste Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards and in 2011, Royal Malewane was voted No 3 in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Hotels awards.
The architect for the reimagining of the Grain Silo Complex, which combines both the museum and the hotel above it, is renowned industrial designer Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio, London. Speaking on the design, he commented that from the outside, the greatest visible change to the grain silo’s monumental structure will be the addition of pillowed glazing panels, inserted into the existing geometry of the upper floors, which will bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this will transform the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbour.
Liz Biden, the owner of The Royal Portfolio acclaimed for her exceptional interior design, explained that, “We have always wanted to open a hotel in our home city of Cape Town. The Silo is an exciting and ambitious project which we believe will perfectly complement our existing properties and rank among the very best hotels in the world. The building is modern and industrial so the design will reflect that with the addition of softer, more colourful touches.”
