Hotly awaited fashion wing opens at Menlyn Park

Menlyn Park, situated just off the N1 highway to the east of the city, has long been the city of Pretoria’s premier shopping Centre . Established in 1979, it is a sprawling, four level complex covering 118,253m2, offering a wide mix of retail brands from fashion and food to electronics and homeware, as well as food and family entertainment.

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre last week launched its much anticipated fashion wing, a triple-level smorgasbord of over 100 cutting edge fashion brands including Paris Hilton, C-Squared, Replay, Geri, Superdry, Re: Jeans and Palladium.

The new fashion wing replaces the old food court and is part of the ambitious R2 billion redevelopment of this much-loved super-regional shopping centre. The wing extends to the new, double-level Food and Entertainment Court which opened in December last year, a vast emporium of fast food and family entertainment.

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, equally co-owned by Pareto Limited (Pareto) and Old Mutual Life Assurance Company (South Africa) Limited, is investing R2 billion in a major redevelopment of the centre, including a massive expansion and refurbishment. The centre will become one of the largest malls on the continent and in the southern hemisphere, with over 500 shops.

Traditional brands like Guess, Levi’s and Diesel are showcased alongside the exciting new labels like Paris Hilton, C-Squared, Geri and Palladium – all firsts for Pretoria, and Woolworths’ hot new jeans brand, Re: Jeans, in its first mono-brand store.

The much sought after Paris Hilton brand is associated with style and elegance, offering bags and accessories for young, aspirant women, while Geri embraces a number of international brands like, True Religion Jeans, Aeronautica Militare, Jacob Cohen Jeans and Pal Zileri. C-Squared is cutting edge formal wear for men, while Palladium is a global brand known for its military style boots for men and women.

Other favourites in the existing fashion wing below this level include Gant, Kurt Geiger, Uzzi Clothing, Arrow, Polo, Palzini, Carvallo and Café Cotton. This is just a taste of the fashion on offer in the wing, which ranges from luxury evening wear to street wear, shoes and accessories. Other fashion stores in Menlyn Park include favourites like Cotton On Body, Donna Claire, Forever New, Milady’s, Kingsley Heath, City Chic and Nicci Boutique.
“Fashion was given top priority in the centre’s re-development due to a strong demand from these retailers, all enjoying robust trade results year-on-year, as well as a buoyant consumer market driven by above-inflation wages and relatively low inflation, boosting spending power,” says Peter Levett, CEO of Old Mutual Properties.

The ongoing redevelopment of Menlyn Park entails expanding it by 50 000m2 to include 200 more stores, and recreating the double-level food and entertainment section.

Menlyn Park has seen phenomenal growth in recent years, attracting the best local and international brand retailers, to appeal to the city’s rapidly expanding middle to upper class markets. “By completion, it will be one of the largest malls on the continent and in the southern hemisphere,” says Marius Muller, CEO of Pareto Limited.
