KwaZulu-Natal’s Multi-million rand Tugela Ferry Mall opens

The multi-million rand Tugela Ferry Mall opened its doors to the local community in KwaZulu-Natal’s northern interior last week (23 April 2015) with several thousand excited shoppers and visitors descending on the town’s very first shopping mall.

A vibrant, yet isolated rural town, Tugela Ferry now has its very own 15,000sqm community shopping centre thanks to investment from Copper Zone (Pty) Ltd and retail leasing know-how of Retail Network Services (RNS).

“The opening of the Tugela Ferry Mall was a great success with throngs of people coming to shop and experience their brand new shopping centre. It has been a welcome investment in this rural community, with the Mayor and the local Inkosi and councillors officiating at the opening,” comments Gavin Tagg of RNS.

“For the first time, the more than 184,200 residents of the 41 800 households in bustling Tugela Ferry will enjoy a comprehensive and quality shopping experience in their own town. Tugela Ferry residents will no longer have to travel substantial distances for basic shopping services.

“Tugela Ferry is located 45km north of Greytown. Previously, shopping for Tugela Ferry residents was inaccessible, difficult and costly, with travel expenses reducing their spending power,” adds Tagg.

The new Tugela Ferry Mall is anchored by a 3000sqm Shoprite and 1350sqm Cashbuild. It has some 48 stores, service outlets and eateries offering a comprehensive retail mix, from convenience and banking to fashion, food and furniture. Other major brands that are part of the mix include OK Furniture, The Post Office, Jet, Liquor City, KFC, Standard Bank, Capitec Bank, Rage, Express Stores, Lewis Stores, Pep, Pep Cell, Barnetts, Power Fashion Factory, Studio 88, Beaver Canoe, Dunns and Shoe Zone.

Tugela Ferry Mall will complement its community facilities which include a hospital, municipal offices, police station, schools, courts, the local office of the Department of Home Affairs and a new Library, which is directly next to the mall.

A new 50-bay taxi rank is also part of the mall development, offering even great accessibility for Tugela Ferry residents. Tugela Ferry is on the main R33 route which goes right through town, and means the mall also benefits from excellent accessibility and visibility, making it convenient for passing traffic.

Tugela Ferry is a key town in the heart of Msinga in the Umzinyathi District Municipality. It is on the Tugela River’s northern bank and is a seat of the Tribal Authority Government for the area. The development and opening of Tugela Ferry Mall will also strengthen the town’s central role in the area.
