Newly renovated Blue Waters Resort in Mitchells Plain now open for bookings

The City’s Blue Waters Resort, nestled between Baden Powell Drive and Lukannon Drive in Strandfontein on the False Bay coastline, has undergone a face-lift to the tune of R11 million. Part of the resort is now open for bookings, just in time for the upcoming Easter holidays, while work will continue on the rest of the units.

The renovations to the City of Cape Town’s Blue Waters Resort included upgrades to the offices, staff quarters, 11 two-room and 18 one-room chalets, and the construction of a small conference facility and caravan park. More work will be undertaken as funding becomes available, including improvements to the amphitheater, the construction of a breakaway room, and some landscaping work.

Currently, 11 six-sleeper chalets and four two-sleeper chalets are available for bookings for the Easter weekend and beyond. The remaining 14 two-sleeper chalets will be ready for use towards the end of April 2015.

‘The Blue Waters Resort serves as a recreational facility for mainly local communities on the False Bay coastline. It provides affordable accommodation for our residents who look forward to a break away from their everyday routine.

‘There is a need to continually upgrade and develop the infrastructure in City resorts. Currently, the use of the resorts is seasonal, with intensive use over the festive season and the Easter period. Camping is relatively rare during the winter months, while self-catering chalets provide for year-round use. The challenge is to increase usage of resorts by capitalizing on each facility’s unique location and service offering, so that these assets might attract more visitors out of season.

‘Thanks to their excellent locations, the City’s coastal resorts should be on par with similar facilities anywhere in the world once the recommended infrastructure and management is in place,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.

Work on the resort started in 2011, when 22 of the 40 one-room chalets were converted into 11 two-room units. Eighteen chalets have remained as one-room units. Internal bathrooms and kitchens were also fitted in all chalets that required the provision of water and sewerage infrastructure throughout the resort. In addition, patios with braai areas were added to the units.

A new camping area was developed to accommodate 19 camp sites, with one of the unused ablution blocks being converted and upgraded into an ablution facility that caters specifically for the camping area. A second unused ablution block was upgraded to serve as staff quarters and a cubicle for security guards.

The small conference facility can accommodate approximately 40 people. This facility will be expanded further as a conferencing and events venue that will be linked with the upgrade of the amphitheater, the completion of a breakaway room, and landscaping work.

Future works will include the upgrading of the roads throughout the resort. Smaller improvements will entail changes to the fencing, the demolition of the obsolete buildings, and provision of a seasonal café in one of the buildings next to the offices.

The funding for the project was provided from the City’s Urban Renewal Project.

These resorts are a key element of Cape Town’s coastal recreational nodes, enhancing visitor experience of the coastline and the surrounding natural areas,’ said Alderman Walker.
