Work has begun on the long-awaited upgrade of Kleinmond’s scenic harbour – and buyers wishing to be part of this bustling and character-filled precinct have the opportunity to purchase an affordably-priced apartment, right on the harbour’s edge. Pam Golding Properties (PGP) is marketing five completed units in “Harbour Road” at just R1.2 million, inclusive of VAT. The town lies on the Cape’s Whale Coast, between Gordon’s Bay and Hermanus.
PGP’s manager for the development, Louise Varga, says the harbour upgrade is the latest phase in a lengthy, multi-levelled development plan for the area, which has
already seen the retail area around the harbour extended and upgraded, as well as the initial residential component being built. All five of the completed units are already in demand for holiday rentals, and it is anticipated that additional residential phases will be developed in the future, up to a maximum of 30 units per phase. “These 58sqm sectional title apartments are the ideal spot for a weekend getaway from Cape Town,” she says, “being just an hour’s drive from the city, with a spectacular sea-front setting, mountain views, and a bustling retail element alongside which offers restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries and boutiques to explore. The harbour upgrade will further enhance the experience by creating improved facilities which will benefit both holiday-makers/water-sports enthusiasts and the local community.”
The Kleinmond harbour was built around 1940 and enjoyed its heyday during the fishing boom of the 1970’s, but had fallen into disrepair in the ensuing years. Now it is receiving a new lease on life, as developers Wharfside Developments Kleinmond oversee the repair of all breakwaters, dredging of the harbour bowl and upgrade of pedestrian access, as well as building a new jetty and stabilising the harbour walls. Two garages are being equipped for the NSRI and other emergency equipment, while the fish-scaling tables are being upgraded to be more user-friendly for fishermen and the fish-buying public alike.
“These upgrades are being carried out with immense respect for the heritage value of the harbour and its existing buildings,” says Varga, “and will have a very positive impact on the local community and especially the families who make their living from the sea. An environmental oversight specialist is also ensuring that all work is carried out with due respect for the surrounding environment.”
