Top Khayelitsha students have become the inaugural recipients of the Nonkqubela Link Merit Award. These awards have been donated by Investec Property Fund in partnership with the Nonkqubela Link Mall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Sinazo Noto, Sithebele John Hlangu and Bongani Elvis Gqweta from Masiyile Secondary School each received R20 000 towards their tertiary studies for the 2014 academic year. Two students from Bulumko Secondary School were awarded R10 000 each.
The once-off merit awards were launched this year as a pilot community project. Investec Property Fund CEO Sam Leon said: “The merit awards will assist deserving students to study full time at a tertiary institution where they will have an opportunity to pursue a degree and further their education.”
Applications for the Nonkqubela Link Merit Award ran from the beginning of January 2014 and were open to 2013 Grade 12 learners from Bulumko Secondary School and Masiyile Secondary School. Both are in close proximity to the Nonkqubela Link Mall. The winning applicants demonstrated exceptional academic potential in their final matriculation results and had already applied and been accepted to tertiary institutions of their choice.
Nonkqubela Link Mall provides essential retail amenities to the community with operators such as Shoprite, Medicross, including a full service Medicross Clinic, major banks, Ackermans, Pep and others.
