Pam Golding Properties Glenvista sponsors computer literacy instructors at primary school

Learners at Refalletse Primary School in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, are on their way to becoming computer boffins – thanks to Pam Golding Properties (PGP) Glenvista. The real estate agency has been sponsoring the computer literacy curriculum at the school for the past year, which has enabled the teachers to share their new knowledge with their eager pupils.

“The initiative is organised through Futurevista, a company which brings together needy schools and corporate sponsors,” notes Nigel Mullin, manager of the PGP Glenvista office. “Essentially they assist schools which have computer equipment, but no teachers, by providing a teacher, from whom the children are able to learn.”

Futurevista, which has been in operation for 17 years, provides the training of the teachers and also develops the curriculum. After each of their courses, the computer teachers are also able to get additional support via phone, email or Skype. One hundred schools across the country are sponsored by corporate donors and around 80,000 learners benefit from this sponsorship each month. The donating company itself also receives computer training for its staff to the value of their donation

Caswell Nhlapo, an IT instructor at Refalletse Primary School, is thrilled to be teaching his learners new things every lesson. “Every time they walk out of the computer lab after a class, they know something they didn’t know before,” says Nhlapo. “That knowledge is priceless. I want to thank PGP Glenvista for giving me a chance so I can give back to my community.”

Mullin is equally enthusiastic about the programme, “It’s a wonderful initiative to be involved in,” he maintains. “It is vital for young people to be computer literate in this day and age if they want to achieve great things. I’m glad the PGP Glenvista office can do its bit to help the Orange Farm community.”

Any companies or private individuals who would like to sponsor a school and receive the same value in training for themselves are welcome to contact Robyn Barnard at Futurevista on (011) 432 3634 or on Donations start at just R389 per month.
