Approximately R18 million has been allocated to the Human Settlements Directorate’s Edward Road project which will transform a vacant, desolate space into a vibrant new housing area containing 104 single- and double-storey units, a crèche, designated park areas and land set aside for urban agriculture parallel to the Grassy Park Canal.

As the funding is now in place, it is anticipated that the tender for the construction of this project – situated between Edward and Bruce Roads and the Grassy Park Canal – will be advertised soon and that construction could start in the first half of next year.
“This is part of our vision to enable progress for all by helping to create a sustainable neighbourhood that is safe, well-integrated and beautiful. We strongly believe that this project will be a catalyst for further development, job creation and economic opportunities,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Tandeka Gqada.
Each unit will be approximately 40 m2 and contain two bedrooms, a bathroom, an open-plan living and kitchen area, a front stoep, a driveway and a small rear garden. The units are designed to allow for “eyes on the street” to improve community safety. Units will be set on plots ranging from 80 m2 to 153 m2. The design of the units will also allow for easier future private building expansion. The development’s one-way streets will be tree-lined and contain traffic calming measures.
Most of the beneficiaries will come from within a 750 m² radius of the site.
