Nurturing a love of learning

According to statistics, there are as many as 3 million school children in South Africa who do not have the privilege of working at a desk. As many of these children have no formal classrooms, they are forced to kneel on the ground, making learning and completing school work a serious challenge.

Lap Desks are a practical solution to the situation in many schools in South Africa without formal classrooms and desks. The desks are light and durable, and rest on the child’s lap. This provides them with a surface to write on, whether they are sitting on a chair or on the floor. As the desks are portable, children can take their desks home with them, making the task of doing homework easier and more enjoyable.

So far, JSE-listed property company Synergy Income Fund’s Lap Desk project has donated 720 lap desks to Vhutuwangadzebu School, near their Nzhelele Shopping Centre in Makhado, Limpopo. This helps children to focus on their work, while their educators can focus on growing young minds to their full potential.

The handover of the lap desks took place on the 10th of October 2013.

Synergy is a specialised retail property fund with a specific focus on midsized community and regional shopping centres in high-growth nodes.
