110 year old home for sale in Stellenbosch

A character-filled family home dating back to 1903 has come onto the market in the historic heart of Stellenbosch. The property is located in “Die Laan” – one of the oldest roads in South Africa, running alongside the Eerste River. The thoroughfare can be seen noted on some of the very earliest surveys of the town, and this long history has allowed massive oak trees to grow up on its verges, creating a shady, tranquil ambience. Pam Golding Properties has the exclusive mandate to market number 20 Die Laan, a 110 year old home which is on the market at R5.95 million.

PGP agent Anne Fouche says the home’s history dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when the land was acquired by the Onkruydt family. They erected the original homestead with its pitched roof, in 1903. The home was enlarged by subsequent owners in 1941 – they expanded the dwelling and converted a living room into a garage, as well as modernising the facade.

Today the home offers five generous bedrooms and five bathrooms, three of them en suite. There are two spacious living areas flowing from a charming country kitchen, and opening onto a terracotta tiled patio. The partially-covered patio area overlooks a courtyard garden and saltwater-chlorinated swimming pool, creating the ideal environment for al fresco entertaining. The property occupies an erf of 569sqm, and additional features include a study, laundry room and utility room which could easily be converted into an additional bedroom. There is off-street parking for three vehicles.

“Not only is this home filled with character from its polished wooden floors to its shady lace-detailed front stoep,” says Fouche, “but it is very centrally located, within walking distance of the main village and top schools, as well as the university. With some repair work it would be the ideal home in which to raise a family and welcome friends and guests.”
