MyCiTi is preparing to launch a service linking Mitchells Plain with the Cape Town CBD.
The so called ‘N2 Express’ service is the start of the MyCiTi footprint in the area, the first step towards providing quality public transport in the Metro South East region of Cape Town.
The N2 Express MyCiTi service will provide a regular, reliable, affordable and convenient service for commuters travelling to the Cape Town CBD. These buses will travel into town and dock at the Civic Centre station, where passengers can transfer to other areas serviced by MyCiTi buses, or connect to other parts of Cape Town via the near-by commuter rail station.
The proposed route starts in the Mitchells Plain Town Centre, along AZ Berman Drive, right onto the R300 and then left onto the N2 Bus minibus taxi (BMT) lane towards Cape Town via Hospital Bend. The route is planned for operations by the end of 2013.
A second route is proposed to start at the Mitchells Plain Town Centre and use Wespoort, Eisleben and Morgenster Drives towards Vanguard Drive and then into the Cape Town CBD. The details of this route are still being reviewed. This route is planned for operations by mid-2014.
“Of critical importance to this whole process has been the early engagement with and buy-in from the existing transport operators in the area,” said Councillor Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town. “Discussions are underway, and consultation with all stakeholders will be on-going to ensure stakeholder needs are incorporated where possible.”
As part of the expanding roll-out of MyCiTi across Cape Town, a route linking Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to Wynberg via Lansdowne Road is in the planning phase as the next Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. As the system grows it will become more and more convenient for people to commute with MyCiTi.
“Public transport is widely used throughout this area and the MyCiTi buses will be a welcome addition to this area of Cape Town. The residents of Mitchells Plain will benefit hugely from the clean, comfortable, reliable and affordable service that MyCiTi provides,” said Cllr Herron.
