Harnessing the skills, expertise and CSI spend of the property sector to make a difference

The Property Foundation, with the support of their members, assists established NGO’s with well planned and managed infrastructure projects that turn communities around and leave a lasting legacy. By harnessing the skills, expertise and CSI spend of the property sector; they can uplift distressed communities and change all our lives for the better.

At the age of 14, Simone Van der Berg dropped out of school for the first time, but decided to return and start high school. However, at the age of 17 she was a full time carer for her sickly granny as well as her young siblings, life was tough and School seemed to add to her burden. “I was one of many and no one cared if I didn’t go to school. If it was not for the School of Hope, I would not have been someone who dreamt bigger than myself. I would have given in to everything around me, fallen pregnant and been living in the backyard like most of my friends from high school.” Said Simone who was lucky enough to be introduced to people who cared about and invested time in her.

The School of Hope gave her a second chance. She grabbed it with both hands and in 2008 passed matric and went on to complete an internship with Ambassadors in Sport. In 2011 she went to New York on a mentorship programme and then completed her Early Childhood Development studies at College of Cape Town. Today, at the age of 25, Simone is the principal of the Graceland pre-primary school in Stellenbosch.

At The Property Foundation membership event where Simone told her story, she said “I want to inspire Principals to inspire teachers who change the lives of the little ones” It is stories like Simone’s that make us aware of the important work done by organizations such as the School of Hope, however very little thought is given to the fact that without a suitable building their work is severely hampered and could even grind to a halt.
